Who is journaling for???
The STUDENTS..
•it is a place for them to think about ideas and collect ideas
•it helps in that never ending process that all scientists and mathematicians go through: gathering, organizing, and clarifying thoughts
•it helps them make sense of an idea and present it effectively
•it’s a valuable tool that the student and teacher use to communicate together without anyone else having to know
and that is not all…
There are four main types of writing assignments that you can use in your math class.
•journal logs: simple diary entry; topics can range from strategies used in a math game to thoughts and feelings concerning a specific strategy.
Ex: A mathematics activity I enjoy is ___________ because_______________.
•solving math problems: students are given a problem to solve in which they show their thinking and reasoning by drawing pictures and/or writing explanations. Questions are open-ended and sometimes have multiple answers.
Ex: A baker has a fudge pan that she cut into 24 equal pieces. If the fudge is cut into square pieces with 1 inch sides, what could be the dimensions of the pan?
•explaining ideas: Encourage students to: give written description, draw a picture, give non-examples, think Frayer Model
Ex: If you had an even number pieces of gum and an odd number of people, how would you divide it up?
•explaining thought processes: gives students a fresh way to look at mathematics students who feel more interested in writing than in math, will bring their strengths into the math assignment this type of writing helps students see the link between Math and ELA
Ex: What would life be like if you were only 1 cm tall?
